Discover the Japanese tradition of Sashiko, the art of functional and decorative fabric repair. Originally developed as a practical way to reinforce and mend clothing, Sashiko was commonly used on fishermen’s coats, with traditional patterns inspired by the natural world—including waves, mountains, and bamboo thickets.
The good news? No advanced sewing skills are required. Sashiko designs are created using a simple running stitch, making this an approachable and satisfying craft for beginners and experienced menders alike.
Over the course of this three-hour workshop, you’ll learn the basics of Sashiko and have everything you need to start—and finish—your own repair project. Please bring a garment of your choice that could use a little love, with a repair area no larger than 6 × 6 inches total - a little character is encouraged; a complete wardrobe emergency may require a separate appointment). Sessions will take place on Saturday November 21 from 1-4, and Sunday November 22 from 1-4.
This introductory workshop will be facilitated by Chelsea Keenan, a skilled sewist and longtime educator, with assistance from her talented helpers. Chelsea has spent 15 years working in environmental, special, and art education, and derives inspiration from the beauty, patterns, and lessons found in nature.
The workshop will take place at the home of local artist, Kathryn Gardiner, founder of Rescue Rose LLC. For more information: https://www.rescue-rose.com/
