October Field Mission: Wekiva River

Join Florida Field Club for a conservation day at Wekiwa Springs State Park, in partnership with Seminole County SERV!

We’ll begin our day working alongside Seminole County SERV to help remove invasive plants that can crowd out Florida’s native species and change the habitats local wildlife depend on. Kids will get an up close look at what invasive species are in comparison to native plants and why managing them matters.

Once our work is done, we’ll head down the road to Wekiva Island where Wekiva After Dark comes to life!

Terri Jones from PERCH will be joining us with a live owl ambassador for an up close encounter with one of Florida’s nighttime hunters. We’ll discover what wakes up along the Wekiva when the sun goes down, get an incredible look at a real owl, and learn what makes these birds such amazing hunters.

Then it’s time to become wildlife detectives. Each kid will dissect a real owl pellet, uncover tiny bones and skulls, and use the clues they find to figure out what an owl had for dinner.

And the adventure doesn’t have to end there! 🎃

Families are invited to stick around Wekiva Island afterward for The Tooting Otter Trick or Treat from 2–3 PM. Kids can bring their costumes, dress up, and trick-or-treat their way around the island for an extra bit of October fun.

OUR MISSION

1. Learn about invasive and native Florida species
   2. Remove invasive plants and help protect native habitat
   3. Experience Wekiva After Dark
   4. Give kids a real opportunity to participate in conservation

Florida Field Club Field Missions are designed to give kids real opportunities to explore Florida while contributing to the places they’re learning about. We want children to leave knowing that protecting Florida isn't something reserved for scientists, park rangers, or adults.

These activities are aimed at kids 5-12 but open to all curious kids! Each participating child will receive a collectible t-shirt to go along with the Field Mission of the month.
