Acclaimed trumpeter, composer and bandleader Marquis Hill, winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Trumpet Competition, brings his Sweet Surrender Trio across the Midwest for a 12-stop tour presented by the Midwest Jazz Collective (MJC). Hill, on trumpet and FX, is joined by Micah Collier on bass and Jillian Upshaw on drums and FX.

The tour connects an artist shaped by the Midwest with the network of musicians, educators, presenters and audiences that continues to sustain jazz throughout the region. Raised on Chicago’s South Side, Hill studied at Kenwood Academy and participated in the Ravinia Jazz Scholars program before earning degrees from Northern Illinois University and DePaul University. He developed on Chicago bandstands alongside musicians including Fred Anderson, Ernest Dawkins and Von Freeman before emerging onto the international stage.

Over the course of his career, Hill has collaborated with artists from across the jazz spectrum, including Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, Nate Smith and Makaya McCraven. a bandleader, his own musical language reaches well beyond conventional genre lines, drawing freely from hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo-soul and electronic music.
