Throughout history, various traditions sprung around the burying of the dead and what they got to take with them to the grave. Various traditions sent the dead into the afterlife with different things like food, clothing, weapons, money or other personal items they possessed during their lives.
In this artist-led workshop we will connect the idea of grave goods to one of the universe's inviolable law: energy and matter can not be created nor destroyed. In a cosmic way, we are the universe's old nachos.
This project and process tangibly connects the cycle of matter and energy to the cycle of life and death. Participants will be able to create playful or thoughtful miniature sculptures by combining small found objects with air dry clay. Sculptures made could be attributed to lost loved ones or participants could create their future grave goods.
We encourage participants to bring their own small found object for incorporating into this project.
