About This Event

Subodhana Wijeyeratne wrote an academic book on the history of the Japanese space program-- and he also writes sci-fi! We love this pairing, and can't wait to welcome him to Bird in Hand on October 28 to spotlight his science fiction novel, Triangulum.

Karina A. Vado, Senior Lecturer in Medicine, Science, and the Humanities at Johns Hopkins University, will join Wijeyeratne in conversation, to discuss what Publisher's Weekly calls "an elegant and layered space opera" that follows three young humans in a far-future galaxy sliding into war.

See you there!

Subodhana Wijeyeratne is a speculative-fiction writer and historian whose work explores empire, memory, technology, and the strange futures societies build from their pasts. He is the author of Triangulum: An Epic of the Nine Worlds of Surya, The Slixes, the short story collection Tales from the Stone Lotus. His short fiction has appeared in Analog Science Fiction and Fact, khōréō, Aurealis, Electric Spec, Kaleidotrope, The Future Fire, and numerous other publications. His story “Termina” was a finalist for Analog’s Readers’ Choice Award, while “They Meet in the Wall” received a Mariner Award. Wijeyeratne is also an assistant professor of history at Purdue University and the author of The Islands and the Stars: A History of Japan’s Space Programs, published by Stanford University Press.

Karina A. Vado (she/her/ella) is a Senior Lecturer in the Program in Medicine, Science, and the Humanities. She earned a PhD in English and a Graduate Certificate in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida and holds an MA in Women’s Studies from UF’s Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. Her research and teaching interests span the fields of Latin/x American Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and Science Fiction Studies. Interdisciplinary in scope, her current book projects, "Latinx DNA: Race, Latinidad and the Gene(ome)," "Speculations of the Flesh: Epigenetic Imaginaries in Latin/x American Science-Fiction," and "Latinx Bioethics in Latinx Literature and Culture,” interrogate the intersections of Latinidad, literature (broadly conceived), and the life sciences and consider the sociocultural implications of the vexed and ever-fluctuating biologization of Latinx identity. She regularly teaches courses on science fiction, Afrofuturism and Latinxfuturisms, literature and science, feminist science and technology studies, and Latin/x American literary and cultural studies.
