The Artist Who Kept Her Head
The Life & Times of Rebelious Portrait Painter, Elizabeth Le Brun
In this presentation we follow the life and times of one of history’s most feisty female artists, Elizabeth Le Brun. Born in France in 1755, Le Brun’s talent led her to become one of the royal family’s favorite painters, completing 30 portraits of Marie Antoinette.
But as the French Revolution gained strength, this connection to the doomed Queen almost cost Le Brun her own head. Divorced in an age when divorce equalled scandal and supporting herself through her art at a time when men dominated the art world, single mother, Elizabeth Le Brun refused to be subdued or broken. Her strong spirit and determination enabled this most feisty female to not only survive but to thrive.
Today’s speaker, author and presenter, Elvira Woodruff lives in Martins Creek.
