Young people across the nation are facing a growing mental health crisis, and Chicago is not immune. In A Better Chicago’s 2025 citywide youth survey, 95% of respondents identified mental health as a significant challenge for young people today. While the COVID-19 pandemic intensified isolation, increased screen time, and contributed to disengagement from school and community, many young people continue to struggle with connection, belonging, and support in their daily lives—particularly within school environments where they spend much of their time.
Addressing youth mental health requires more than clinical care alone. Schools play a central role in this work, serving not only as places of learning but as critical hubs for connection, trust, and belonging. When students have strong relationships with teachers and staff, feel seen by caring adults, and engage in meaningful, relevant learning experiences, they are more likely to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
Join A Better Chicago to explore how schools, families, nonprofits, and city leaders, can strengthen youth mental health outcomes across Chicago. Panelists will discuss how trusted adult relationships, supportive school climates, and engaging, culturally relevant curriculum can reduce isolation and increase student engagement. The conversation will also highlight innovative school-based approaches that foster belonging, strengthen peer connections, and build resilience—ultimately improving both well-being and long-term educational outcomes for young people.
