Join us for a workshop with local ceramicist Venessa Becerra and create a thematic handbuilt sconce. This fun and unique activity incorporates an additional restorative aspect of working with earth-based clay, connecting us to an ancient ancestral & cultural sculpting practice. Place a tea light on your completed wall sconce in memory of a departed loved one to complete the artwork.
This workshop is free of charge and for ages 13+ (with a parent or guardian); light refreshments will be provided. Sponsored by Raices Cultura and the City of Coachella.
About RAICES Cultura:
Since its inception in 2004 by a group of youth, this grassroots organization had zero funding other than individuals contributions from the founders - recent high school and college graduates from the Eastern Coachella Valley.
These dedicated youth volunteered countless hours to start the organization and define their mission & vision for community-led change. Their visionary work, ranging from challenging local politics and advocating for a healthier community by establishing public green spaces, increasing affordable housing, preserving traditional heritage, defending human rights, and fostering art & culture, planted the seeds of what RAICES Cultura has become today.
In 2005, the founders organized the first free community event for Dia de Los Muertos and in 2026, we celebrate our 21st Anniversary of honoring this sacred tradition with a collective gathering. See you there on November 7 from 4p-12a in Pueblo Viejo - Downtown Coachella.
