We’re wrapping up another fantastic year of the One Block Challenge™ in Paso Robles and getting ready to head into our third year together in 2027.
To close out the season, we’re bringing the Paso grower community together at Paso de Record Vineyard with Randy Record for a practical, hands-on afternoon exploring one of the most exciting tools in regenerative vineyard management: livestock integration and managed grazing.
We’ll be joined by Nic Moss, owner of Bunchgrass Grazing, who brings more than a decade of hands-on experience in regenerative land management and ecological education. Over the past six years, Nic and his team have designed and implemented regenerative grazing systems across public and private lands throughout the Central Coast, including several local regenerative vineyards.
His work uses targeted sheep and goat grazing to help support soil health, biodiversity and greater ecosystem resilience, while balancing the practical realities of livestock management with broader land and restoration goals.
Nic will take us into the practical side of grazing: how and when to bring animals into the vineyard, what good grazing management actually looks like, timing considerations, infrastructure needs, and the real-world opportunities and challenges that come with integrating livestock into vineyards.
We’ll also look at how grazing can support broader vineyard goals, including nutrient cycling, soil health, biodiversity and reducing reliance on mechanical passes.
As always, this is designed to be an informal and highly practical session, with plenty of time to walk the vineyard, ask questions, exchange ideas and hear from other growers about what they’re seeing in the field.
Whether you’re already participating in the One Block Challenge™, have joined us at previous Paso field days, or are simply curious about regenerative viticulture and livestock integration, we’d love to have you there.
Paso Robles holds a special place in the story of the One Block Challenge™. It was here that RVF launched the original pilot program, with a small group of growers willing to test new ideas, learn together and help shape what the 1BC could become. From that original group in Paso Robles, the One Block Challenge™ has grown into an international movement, with programs now spanning the state of California, the UK, South Africa, New Zealand and Chile, and new initiatives continuing to take shape, including Australia, France and beyond. As we head into Year Three, we’re incredibly grateful to the growers who helped start this journey and continue to inspire one another through their openness, experimentation and shared learning.Come join us at Paso de Record on November 17 as we celebrate how far we’ve come, learn together in the vineyard, and look ahead to what’s next for the Paso community and the growing One Block Challenge™ movement around the world.
The One Block Challenge™, developed by the Regenerative Viticulture Foundation and piloted in Paso Robles in February 2025, gives growers a low-risk, practical entry point into regenerative agriculture. Participants commit one vineyard block—or even a few rows—to trial selected regenerative practices for a single season. Each grower chooses from a regionally adapted menu that may include diverse cover crops, compost applications, removing herbicides, reducing tillage, and integrating livestock. Baseline and year-end soil assessments help participants understand the changes on their block and decide whether to expand these practices more widely.
The One Block Challenge is now active in California in Napa, Santa Barbara, Sonoma, and Temecula, and internationally in New Zealand, South Africa, Texas, and the UK!
The Regenerative Viticulture Foundation (RVF) is a registered charity that advocates for the global transition to regenerative farming in vineyards. Its work focuses on translating science into practice and supporting growers in adopting methods that restore soil health, increase biodiversity, and strengthen vineyard resilience. The One Block Challenge™ exemplifies RVF’s broader work to accelerate the adoption of regenerative practices worldwide. RVF’s goal is for 10 % of the world’s vineyards to be managed regeneratively by 2035. Its mission is to inspire and empower the transition towards regenerative viticulture through science, communication, and support for growers. Learn more at regenerativeviticulture.org
