Synopsis

When Silence Is Broken
A True Story by Le'Quasha Harden
Written, Directed, and Produced by Evelyn Jones Reed

Executive Producer Le'Quasha Harden

Inspired by true events, When Silence Is Broken is a powerful and emotionally charged stage play about family secrets, generational trauma, faith, forgiveness, and the courage to confront the truth.

After serving time in county jail, Maya Carter is determined to rebuild her life. What begins as a journey toward freedom takes an unexpected turn when she receives a letter from her grandmother, Mae Lois, shortly before her death. The letter reveals painful truths that have been buried for decades—truths involving abuse, fear, shame, and the devastating silence that fractured an entire family.

As Maya pieces together her family's history, she discovers that her mother was a victim long before she became a mother herself. Through flashbacks, difficult conversations, and moments of unexpected grace, Maya begins to understand the wounds that shaped the women who came before her. What she once viewed as abandonment is revealed to be a story of survival.

Inside the jail, Maya finds healing through an unlikely sisterhood of women who challenge, encourage, and uplift one another. Guided by the wisdom of Ms. Carrie, the friendship of Keisha and Renee, and the powerful voice of Tausha, Maya learns that freedom is more than walking out of a jail cell—it is breaking free from the pain, shame, and secrets that have held generations captive.

Filled with heartfelt drama, moments of laughter, powerful music, and a message of hope, When Silence Is Broken reminds audiences that healing begins when truth is spoken, grace is extended, and silence no longer has the final word.

This unforgettable production is a testimony to resilience, faith, and the belief that no matter what has happened in your past, your future can still be filled with purpose, healing, and promise.

Theme:
"You are not what happened to you. You are what you choose next."

"Some stories are told to entertain. This story is told to help someone heal."

When Silence Is Broken

A Story of Truth, Healing, and Hope

Every family has a story.

Some stories are celebrated. Others remain hidden behind silence.

When Silence Is Broken is inspired by the true story of Executive Producer and award-winning actress Le'Quasha Harden. It is a powerful journey of faith, forgiveness, healing, and redemption that confronts difficult realities while offering audiences hope for the future.

This production explores the lasting impact of childhood trauma, family secrets, incarceration, broken relationships, and generational pain. More importantly, it demonstrates that silence does not have to define a person's future.

Across our communities, countless individuals quietly carry wounds from abuse, neglect, addiction, incarceration, and family dysfunction. Many suffer in silence, believing their past determines their worth or their future.

When Silence Is Broken challenges that belief.

Through compelling storytelling, moments of laughter, powerful original music, and a message grounded in God's love and grace, this production reminds audiences that healing begins when truth is spoken.

At its heart, this is not a story about tragedy.

It is a story about transformation.

The woman whose life inspired this production chose not to allow her past to define her future. Today, Le'Quasha Harden is an award-winning actress using her testimony to encourage others that healing is possible and dreams can still become reality.

As the playwright, my desire has always been to create more than entertainment. I believe theatre has the power to educate, encourage, challenge, and inspire. My prayer is that every person who experiences this production leaves knowing three things:

  • You are not what happened to you.
  • Healing is possible.
  • With God, your story is never over.

Inspired by Isaiah 61:1—

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound."

When Silence Is Broken is more than a stage play.

It is an invitation for families to begin difficult conversations.

It is a message of hope for survivors.

It is a reminder that forgiveness is possible, grace is real, and freedom begins when silence is broken.
