by Ryan Davis
A Welsh word for a deep, melancholic longing for home, for a place, a time, or a sense of belonging that is irrevocably lost—or perhaps never truly existed.
On November 5th, Grand Banks welcomes Rockport artist Ryan Davis for the opening of Hiraeth, a new series exploring the emotional landscape of home and the places we carry with us long after we have left them.
Rooted in the landscape he calls home, Davis’s work reflects on memory, place, and the passage of time—considering what remains, what changes, and what can only exist in recollection.
Ryan Davis grew up in a coastal town in Massachusetts. He was exposed to a community driven by working class fishermen and traditional seascape artists. He has had the opportunity to be both an artist and a lobsterman; this has molded his work.
Ryan is known primarily for his oil paintings and charcoal drawings that focus on variety of subject matter including New England maritime seascapes to Pop-Art. He has shown his work nationally in New York and Massachusetts and internationally in Cortona, Italy.
Davis received his BA in Art and-Art History and Business in the Liberal Arts from St. Lawrence University in 2018. Additionally, he received his Master Degree from the New York Academy of Art in 2022. He currently lives and works in Rockport, Massachusetts and New York City.
