Silent Book Club - Sussex County, NJ Chapter

Sussex County's chapter of Silent Book Club invites you to spend an afternoon reading in good company at Cattail Hollow Farm, a River Friendly-certified small farm in Lafayette, NJ. Bring whatever book you're currently working on — fiction, nonfiction, a long-overdue library hold, an audiobook with headphones — and settle in alongside other local readers in a beautiful outdoor setting.

The format is simple: We arrive at 3:00 and spend the first half hour getting settled, grabbing something to eat or drink from our on-site food vendor, and chatting briefly about what we're reading. From 3:30 to 4:30, we read quietly together. The last half hour is open for conversation about books, recommendations, and whatever else comes up — or for more reading, if that's what you'd rather do. There's no assigned book, no discussion questions, and no pressure to talk if you're not in the mood.

Our October meetup is hosted at Cattail Hollow Farm, started in 2022 by Meg and Kim, first-generation farmers raising pasture-raised chickens, ducks, and guineas and growing vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs — all naturally, with no synthetic sprays. Cattail Hollow is River Friendly-certified, meaning they're committed stewards of the soil, water, and land around them. The farm also hosts seasonal classes, workshops, and farm-to-table dinners, and is dedicated to building an inclusive, welcoming community — which makes it a fitting home for an afternoon of quiet reading together. Lake Born Coffee and Queens Way Cafe will provide warm drinks and tasty snacks for sale.

Silent Book Club began in San Francisco in 2012 and has grown into a global community of nearly 2,000 chapters in more than 55 countries. All readers are welcome.

Important Info:

• This event will take place outdoors in an open field. Come prepared for the weather, and dress in layers if it's cool. Bring a blanket, lawn chair, or whatever you'd like to sit on; limited folding chairs will be available on site.
• If there is inclement weather, we will move indoors to the farm's greenhouse. You will be notified in advance if we are switching to the indoor setup.
• Pastries and snacks available for purchase from Queens Way Cafe and coffee will be served by Lake Born Coffee. You are also welcome to stop in the farm store for some fresh produce to take home!
• We encourage attendees to carpool if you're coming with people you know — parking is in an open field and space is limited.
• This event is not ADA accessible. The farm is a working property with field and gravel terrain; it is not wheelchair or walker accessible.
