1911's L’Inferno tranforms the poem’s descriptions of Hell into a an ingenius tableaux drawn from Dante’s text and Gustave Doré’s illustrations. Gods stand alongside monsters and mortals, while the punishments of the damned give form to Dante’s account of sin and divine judgment. The film brings together mythology, medieval Juedo-Christian theology, and Doré’s powerful depictions of the infernal underworld.
As Italy's first feature full-length production, the sheer ambition and scope of the film demanded three directors. Adolfo Padovan(scolar & writer), Francesco Bertolini(artist & cinematographer), and Giuseppe De Liguoro(special effects pioneer).
