Tonight, we celebrate the history of Coconut Grove and get ready to strut in parades!
· COCONUT GROVE, 1974 | 28 MIN.
Produced by the Junior League of Miami, Coconut Grove chronicles the history of this distinctive Miami community through still photographs interspersed with live-action shots of present-day Coconut Grove.
The film documents the area’s earliest settlers, including the Pent and Frow families, and, following the Homestead Act of 1862, the Beasley, Peacock and Munroe families. It traces the growth of Coconut Grove as seen in the development of Black communities and both civic and social institutions such as the Housekeeper’s Club and the library.
Incorporated as a city in 1919 and annexed by Miami in 1925, the area remains a unique residential and recreational community on the bay.
· ALWAYS FOR PLEASURE, 1978 | 58 MIN.
This documentary is director Les Blank’s celebration of the spirit, music, food and social traditions of New Orleans. The film features Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, musical performances by Allen Toussaint, Kid Thomas Valentine, Professor Longhair and others, as well as footage of Mardi Gras Indians, a "jazz funeral" with traditional music, second-line parades and the cooking and enjoyment of red beans and rice and a crawfish boil.
