What is it like to walk fully in the dark, without headlamps or flashlights, relying on how our eyes can adapt to darkness? How can our other senses help orient us to where we are? On this outing, we’ll explore how our bodies, and certain other animals, adapt to navigating at night. As dusk descends, we’ll get used to the waning light through sensory exercises that will help us navigate Clark Nature Preserve without the aid of artificial light.
What to Expect and How to Prepare: Our hike will be slow and intentional. Frequent pauses will be made to examine how our night vision is adapting and to check in on everyone’s comfort navigating in the dark. We’ll hike 0.9 miles on the universally accessible Lloyd Clark trail. This trail is free of large rocks and roots, and it has minimal elevation change. There are port-a-johns available on site.
Participants should bring water, a snack, and pertinent personal medication. Wear layers and arrive dressed to move slowly. Hiking in the full dark is a slow, unique endeavor. Come in sturdy hiking footwear. Headlamps and flashlights are not needed as we will be hiking without the use of artificial light. The hike leader will have backup headlamps should a light source be required.
This event is recommended for ages 13 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).
