Schools are regarded as spaces for learning, understanding our relationships to others, and negotiating the realities of power dynamics. They are also sites of contradiction, sometimes providing refuge and fostering experimentation, while also reproducing exclusion and authority. Can we imagine the school as a space for collective study? What forms of knowledge are recognized and shared?
For Studies in Sanctuary, artists Christopher Rey Pérez, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and Tim Simonds each offer a lesson that approaches collective study as an opportunity to imagine alternative worlds to the ones we inherit. Pérez explores the porous potential that emerges through acts of crossing different forms of borders through salsa-making, as we each offer our personal recipes. Rasheed engages collective writing to explore what is unearthed through disobedient approaches to expected modes of communication. Together, the artists invite us to consider cultivating sanctuary as a practice that necessitates collective study.
Studies in Sanctuary is part of Toward Sanctuary, a series of programs exploring the cultivation of sanctuary as a living history and ongoing aspiration inspired by Guadalupe Maravilla’s artistic practice and upcoming Creative Time public art commission.
Events will take place at CTHQ and engage other spaces across the city, including a nightclub and an urban farm.
