Skeletons Out of the Closet
Last Thursday Opening Reception, Sept. 24, 6-9pm
The annual Spooky Art Show returns to Lavaun's Community Gallery for its third year, this time as “Skeleton's Out of the Closet.” Curated from an open call for submissions, this show features art that is spooky, scary, strange, and out of the ordinary. Alberta Street Gallery member Julia Alora, a lifetime lover of Halloween, has hand-picked this year’s collection of frights and delights from more than 10 local artists.
What makes art spooky? Art that focuses on fears, phobias, or disquieting themes. Settings or characters or creatures that are dark, born from night, or upsetting to see. Images that capture the fun and nostalgia of playing in a scary space through a safe lens, reminiscent of horror movies and Halloweens past.
Come in for a thrill and a chill, find a new piece to haunt your home, and enjoy beautiful works of art perfect for those who are strange and unusual.
Alberta Street Gallery is a friendly and vibrant cooperative gallery of 30 local artists in the heart of the Alberta Arts District in Northeast Portland.
In addition to our members’ art, we mount monthly shows that begin on the “Last Thursday” of every month. Our front windows feature new work by two of our member artists, and we curate group shows in Lavaun's Community Gallery, a special exhibition space inside the gallery named for and made possible by gallery member Lavaun Benavidez Heaster, a legally blind collage artist who died in 2020.
