On June 18, 2007, the fire service community was forever changed when nine firefighters died in a warehouse fire in Charleston, SC. What was initially dispatched as a trash fire escalated into one of the most scrutinized events in national fire service history. David was the engineer on the first due engine that day. As he operated on the fireground, he witnessed unimaginable loss and things that he will never forget. Moments that continue to shape his life today.
In this powerful and deeply personal seminar, David shares not only a first-hand account of that tragic day, but also the emotional aftermath, lessons learned, and the path toward healing, resilience, and leadership. This seminar will present:
§ Video footage and radio traffic from the incident.
§ Honest discussion about the resistance to change following the tragedy.
§ The personal and professional toll that this catastrophic event took.
§ Insight into mental health awareness, peer support, and resiliency programs developed for emergency services in the years since.
§ Critical conversations on operations, training, culture, and leadership aimed at preventing future tragedies.
§ David’s ongoing journey of growth, purpose, and service after one of the darkest days in fire service history.
§ David’s ibogaine treatment to help overcome the trauma from this incident.
David dedicated more than 2 decades of service to the Charleston (SC) Fire Department, serving in every operational rank from firefighter to Assistant Fire Chief before his retirement. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from The Citadel, a Master’s Degree in Executive Fire Service Leadership, and a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership and Development.
