Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) is at the heart of providing meaningful access and support for students with disabilities—but what makes instruction truly “specially designed”? This interactive session is designed for both general and special education teachers and will move SDI from words written in an IEP to intentional practices implemented throughout the school day.
Participants will explore the purpose of SDI, how SDI connects to a student's disability-related needs and measurable annual goals, and the difference between SDI, accommodations, modifications, and general instructional practices. Teachers will examine examples and non-examples of SDI and learn how to write SDI that is specific, individualized, actionable, and clear enough for any member of the student's educational team to implement consistently.
The session will also emphasize the shared responsibility of general and special education teachers in implementing and documenting SDI. Through practical examples and collaborative activities, participants will practice developing meaningful SDI and determining what effective implementation looks like within the general education classroom and across educational environments.
