We are excited to be working with the Tampa Bay Estuary Program and Pinellas County to restore a 5-acre area in Safety Harbor using Oyster Rag Pots (ORPs)!
We’ve timed this event around low tide, so we expect water levels at the restoration site to be around mid-shin deep. It will be wet, a little muddy, and a lot of fun.
What to Bring
SHOES THAT COVER YOUR FEET AND WILL STAY ON IN MUDDY CONDITIONS. Seriously, people, it’s a little mucky out there. Sandals, slides, Chacos, Crocs, flip-flops, etc. will not work. Think scuba shoes or old sneakers that lace up securely.
Water
Snacks
Sun protection
Gloves (we’ll have some extras)
What We’ll Be Doing
We’ll have a 20-foot trailer full of Oyster Rag Pots ready to go. We’ll carry the ORPs out to the restoration area, give everyone a quick lesson on how to install them, and then get to work placing them on one-foot centers to build new oyster reef.
Once we’re finished, we’ll carry the empty bins back to the trailer, exchange some well-earned high fives, and head out to enjoy the rest of our Saturday afternoon!
Thanks for volunteering your time to help us restore oyster reef in Tampa Bay. We’re looking forward to getting muddy with you!
