Astronomy on Tap @ Four Peaks Brewing

Each month, the Four Peaks Brewing 8th Street Pub will become the center of the universe for one night of fun, food, drinks, and everything space!

Join the official Valley of the Sun satellite of Astronomy on Tap as they take us on journeys across our planet, our solar system, and beyond.

Because 42 is the answer to everything, pints of Cosmic Daydream West Coast IPA will be $4.20 during all Astronomy on Tap events. Other drinks and food will be available for purchase.

This completely free event will feature different themes and speakers each month, so be sure to attend each one! Tickets are suggested, but not required. All seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

For September, we'll be asking a question some never consider: What good does it do for a planet to host life?

Our featured speaker is Prof. Everett Shock (School of Earth and Space Exploration), who will take a planetary perspective on the emergence of life. If life is something planets do, what job is it doing for them? What problem does it solve? And could asking the question this way change how we search for life on other worlds? Everett is a geochemist who has spent decades studying how water, rock, and energy interact, from Yellowstone's hot springs to the seafloor, so expect a talk that starts with rocks and ends somewhere much farther away.

For the second half of the night, we are heading outside. We will have telescopes set up for night-sky observing, weather permitting, and the timing could not be better: Saturn reached opposition on October 4, so it rises at sunset and is about as close and bright as it gets all year. Come see the rings for yourself (if we are lucky!). Thank you to Jenny Patience and the Astronomy Club for letting us borrow their telescopes.
