Cooper Museum Speaker Series: The Surprising History of American Funerals

From Parlors to Providers: The Surprising History of the American Funeral

Uncover the fascinating evolution of how we honor the departed in this unique session led by Debbie Stone, former Mayor of Upland and a cornerstone of the local community through Stone Funeral Home. This talk traces the shift from intimate 19th-century home wakes in "death parlors" to the specialized, professional industry we recognize today. Drawing on her deep roots in one of the region’s most historic family businesses, Stone will share surprising insights into the cultural shifts, local traditions, and changing etiquette that have shaped the American funeral experience. It is a rare opportunity to hear a community leader’s perspective on the history of a profession that touches every family.
