This photo exhibition explores the remarkable transfer of Austrian alpine expertise to the mountains of the United States. It demonstrates that the modern American ski industry was not merely a domestic achievement, but also the result of decades of Austrian-American cultural and technical exchange and cooperation.

Austrians such as Friedl Pfeifer, Hannes Schneider, Sepp Ruschp, Pepi Gramshammer, and Josef “Pepi” Stiegler left Austria and became pioneering figures at iconic American ski destinations including Sun Valley, Aspen, Vail, Mount Cranmore, Stowe, and Jackson Hole.

By introducing the Arlberg technique—the systematic approach to alpine skiing developed by Hannes Schneider in St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria, during the early twentieth century—these pioneers did far more than teach Americans how to ski. They transferred a sophisticated system of ski instruction that combined technique, pedagogy, mountain safety, and professional organization. They recruited hundreds of Austrian ski instructors and taught generations of Americans how to master the slopes—including Walt Disney, U.S. President Gerald Ford, and Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable, Jane Russell, Ingrid Bergman, Robert Redford, and Clint Eastwood.

Austrian influence extended far beyond ski instruction. Austrian manufacturers and engineering companies also became important players in the development of American skiing, from ski equipment to chairlifts, cable cars, and gondolas, with companies such as Doppelmayr playing a major role.

The exhibition also explores the cultural blueprint Austria provided. From Tyrolean-inspired architecture and alpine-style mountain villages to the social traditions of après-ski, “Tyrolean Evenings,” folk music, and yodeling, Austrian influences helped shape both the visual identity and social culture of American skiing.

Particular attention is given to the remarkable postwar relationship between Austrian ski instructors and veterans of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division. Their shared knowledge of mountain warfare and skiing helped create lasting personal and professional connections across the Atlantic. Veterans of the 10th Mountain Division went on to play important roles in founding, developing, or managing dozens of ski areas across the United States.
