When young English aristocrats embarked on the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century, their journey took them from comfort to terror, from terror to pleasure, from civilization to ruins—ultimately bringing a small but influential contingent home transformed in gloriously unexpected ways. Inspired by a forgotten moment in genderqueer history—when the so-called Macaroni Men fascinated 1770s London—this experimental performance constructs bodies of ornament and excess, publicly assembled and dissected, playfully exposing the authentic self as just another costume.
Christian A. Johnson Artist-in-Residence Adam Samuel Goldman and Assistant Professor of Dance, Department of Theater and Dance, Hank Bamberger will develop the piece with Colgate University Students of Dance.
